NEW OTHER COMMON HERBS FAVE

Chives, Mongolian

Perennial
This is another herb that was given to me by Allium expert and renowned seed saver, John Swenson. Mongolian chives have become my go-to chive variety because of their robust flavor and because they are so easy to grow. They always look good, even in the heat and drought of the summer! The leaves are flat like regular Asian chives, but wider and thicker for more flavor and substance. They grow back quickly after cutting. The flowers are pale lavender and the bees love them!

NEW ADVENTUROUS HERBS

Fennel, Bronze

Annual
This is a non-bulbing type of fennel that is used for its leaves and seeds. The leaves are a gorgeous reddish bronze color and are a tasty addition to salads, cole slaws, and dressings. I like to use it in tea too. The seeds can be used in place of anise seeds in baking. Swallowtail butterfly caterpillars love the leaves!

NEW ADVENTUROUS HERB FAVE

Oregano, Kent Beauty

Annual
Kent Beauty oregano is grown in the herb garden mainly as an ornamental. It has a beautiful trailing habit that lends itself well to hanging baskets, planters, and garden walls. The blue-green leaves are oval shaped and silver-veined. The pink bracted, hop-like flowers cover the plant from summer through fall and are the main attraction. They can be used fresh or dried in flower arrangements. The aroma is milder than culinary oregano, but still very nice. Tender perennial, but can be brought in for the winter, then cut back before setting outside in the spring.

Cosmonaut Volkov

Red Tomato Ind.65 days

Sometimes I have to try a new tomato variety just because of the name! Cosmonaut Volkov was a Russian (originally from Ukraine) cosmonaut who died in space in 1971. These plants are very sturdy as well as cold tolerant, making it a dependable early producer, even when summer is late in coming. The fruits are medium sized and red, and the flavor as described by Fedco is "sweet, rich, and full-bodied."

Dester

Pink Tomato Ind.80 days

Dester is a tomato with an interesting story. It originated in Germany and was brought to America by Dr. Herbert Edgar Dester's ancestors. He lived in Berne, Indiana and was a medical doctor and a Mennonite missionary to India. He shared his seeds with his Amish housekeeper, Anna, who moved to Missouri and eventually shared the seeds to someone who shared them with Seed Saver's Exchange, which is where I get my seeds. So many steps to this delicious pink tomato. It is very large (8-24 ounces) and very tasty!
