NEW BASIL


African Blue

Annual
This new basil is beautiful! It has large purple-green leaves and the plants grow tall and bushy with lovely pinkish lavender flower spikes that are irresistable to bees and other pollinators. While many people grow it as an ornamental, the leaves taste great in pesto or any other use. I'd say the flavor is somewhere between Greek basil and cinnamon basil, but it is actually a cross between African basil and a red leaved Italian basil.

This variety has some resistance to downy mildew so it will last longer into the late summer and fall. Same delicious sweet flavor as Genovese basil. Do not crowd and keep in full sun.

Everleaf Compact Italian Basil

Productive, compact, and slow-bolting plant with downy mildew and fusarium resistance. 2-3" long, glossy and cupped leaves with classic Genovese basil aroma. This very compact plant, with short spaces between leaves and branches, produces high yields of leaves and leaf tips, and is perfect for growing in containers. Slower to flower than other varieties by up to 8 weeks.

Obsession Italian Basil

This is an exciting new variety of traditional Italian basil that is VERY RESISTANT to downy mildew! The leaves are large and dark green with a glossy shine and the flavor and aroma is sweet and earthy. Somewhat compact plants are good for containers as well as planting in the ground. Also has resistance to fusarium.

Prospera Italian Basil

This new basil is very similar to Aroma with it's classic Genovese appearance and flavor. The leaves are large and perfect for making pesto! In addition to being resistant to fusarium wilt, this new variety of basil has strong resistance to downy mildew so it will stay healthy until cold temperatures set in. Larger plants than Everleaf or Obsession, but still good for larger containers.

Red Rubin

Dark purple, Italian large-leaf type basil. High yields and great flavor. Leaves are 3 inches long and are a copper tinged purple color. Equally stunning on top of Caprese Salad as in a flower bed! Annual.

Mojito Mint

Everyone asks for this one and I’m finally going to be offering it! You can use any kind of spearmint to make a mojito, but this Cuban mojito mint is the authentic mint for making the famous drink. Pretty crinkled leaves on vigorous plants. Can be used for any other mint dish also. Perennial.

Wild Mint

Perennial
There is only one kind of mint native to North America, and this is it. The leaves and stems are green and slightly hairy and the flavor is that of a mild, sweet peppermint. It flowers with white “balls” of flower clusters at the tops of the stems. Keep cutting back to keep it bearing well.

This is a sweeter mint with a pretty textured leaf. Needs more water in the middle of the summer than other mints. Delicious! Great for tea!

Asian Chives

Perennial
Sometimes called garlic chives or flat leaf chives, these have a flat leaf and a robust onion-garlic flavor. Strong plants with abundant white flowers that are also edible.

Chives, Mongolian

_Perennial_
This is another herb that was given to me by Allium expert and renowned seed saver, John Swenson. Mongolian chives have become my go-to chive variety because of their robust flavor and because they are so easy to grow. They always look good, even in the heat and drought of the summer! The leaves are flat like regular Asian chives, but wider and thicker for more flavor and substance. They grow back quickly after cutting. The flowers are pale lavender and the bees love them!

Round Leaf Chives

Leaves have the traditional round shape and mild onion flavor. Often called common chives. Edible flowers are abundant and are a pretty lavender color.

The classic Mexican herb used in salsas. Also popular in Asian cooking. Slow to bolt (blossom), but after it does, leaf production goes down. Will re-seed itself if you let some flowers go. Annual.

Dill is one of the most versatile and well-loved herbs. Easy to grow. Use in chicken and fish dishes, soups, salads, and of course, pickles. Use both leaves and seeds fresh and dried. Attracts butterfly larvae.

English Wedgewood Thyme

_Perennial_
The leaves of English thyme are slightly more broad than the narrow, pointy leaves of French thyme. This variety has dark green leaves with light green markings. The flavor is slightly sweeter and milder than French thyme and the plant grows taller. Cut back often to keep it full and bushy. Can't take super hot weather, so this is a good one to plant in partial shade.

Lavender

Refreshing clean aroma that is calming to the nerves. Flowers are held above the plants on long stems. Gray-green foliage. Prefers well drained soil. Usually perennial. May need some protection.

Lavender, Fringed French

Annual
This new type of lavender has beautiful gray green leaves that have lovely toothed edges and a lightly wooly texture. The flowers stand about 2 feet tall and are a medium purple color. Not at all hardy in Illinois, but if you plant in a large container with very good drainage, you can overwinter it indoors or in an unheated sunroom.

The indispensable herb (along with basil) for Italian cooking. Fresh leaves have a peppery bite that is lost when dried. Use fresh or dried for pizza and pasta sauces.

Parcel Cutting Celery

Annual

Looks like a cross between celery and curly parsley, but the taste is all celery. Easier to grow than celery in our climate. Can be cut and it will re-grow. Use fresh in salads, cooked in soups, stews, and vegetables. Freezes well.

Fennel, Bronze

This is a non-bulbing type of fennel that is used for its leaves and seeds. The leaves are a gorgeous reddish bronze color and are a tasty addition to salads, cole slaws, and dressings. I like to use it in tea too. The seeds can be used in place of anise seeds in baking. Swallowtail butterfly caterpillars love the leaves!
